What is tooth extraction?

A tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth from its socket in the jawbone. It is done under local anaesthesia, so the area is numb during the procedure.

There are two types:

  • Simple extraction. The tooth is visible above the gum line and can generally be loosened and removed in one piece without the need for surgical access.
  • Surgical extraction. The tooth is broken at the gum line, has curved roots or has not fully come through. Your dentist makes a small opening in the gum and may remove the tooth in parts.

When do I need a tooth extraction?

Your dentist may recommend an extraction if you have any of the following:
Severe tooth decay

The decay has damaged too much of the tooth for a filling, crown or root canal treatment to save it.

A loose tooth from gum disease

Advanced gum disease can wear down the bone that holds a tooth in place. If the tooth is very loose, it may need to be removed.

A cracked or broken tooth

A crack that runs below the gum line usually cannot be repaired.

Crowded teeth

Some patients need one or more teeth removed to make space before braces or Invisalign treatment.

A baby tooth that has not fallen out

If a baby tooth is blocking the adult tooth from coming through, our children’s dental team may advise removing it.

How much does a tooth extraction cost?

A simple tooth extraction at Royce Dental Group starts from $87.20. The final cost depends on which tooth is removed and whether surgery is needed. Your dentist will advise you on the fees after your x-ray, before any treatment starts.

What is a tooth extraction procedure?

step1proc

Consultation and x-ray

Your dentist will examine the tooth and take an x-ray to check the roots and the bone around them. Do let your dentist know about any medical conditions and medication you are taking, especially blood thinners. Your dentist will then explain your options and the fees involved.

step2proc

Tooth extraction

Local anaesthesia is given to numb the area. You will feel some pressure as the tooth is loosened, but you should not feel pain. A simple extraction usually takes about 30 minutes. If surgery is needed, the gum will be stitched after the tooth is removed.

Aftercare

You will bite on a piece of gauze to stop the bleeding. Your dentist will give you aftercare instructions and prescribe painkillers if needed.

How do I care for my mouth after a tooth extraction?

  • Control bleeding: Bite firmly on the gauze provided, following your dentist’s instructions.
  • Protect the blood clot: Avoid rinsing, spitting forcefully or disturbing the extraction site for the first 24 hours.
  • Choose soft foods: Eat soft foods and chew on the other side of your mouth where possible.
  • Avoid smoking and alcohol: Avoid smoking and alcohol during the initial recovery period.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise for at least 24 hours, or as advised by your dentist.
  • Maintain oral hygiene: Brush your other teeth as usual, taking care around the extraction site.

Some soreness and swelling are normal after an extraction. Contact your dentist if bleeding does not stop despite applying firm pressure, or if pain or swelling worsens after the first few days.

What can I do about the gap after an extraction?

A missing tooth can make chewing harder, and the teeth beside it may shift over time. Depending on your case, your dentist may suggest:

You can discuss these options with your dentist before your extraction.

FAQs

The area is numbed with local anaesthesia before the procedure, so you should feel pressure but not pain. Some soreness after the numbness wears off is normal and can be managed with painkillers.

A simple extraction usually takes about 30 minutes. A surgical extraction can take up to an hour, depending on your case.

Most patients go back to their normal activities the next day. The gum usually closes over in 1 to 2 weeks.
There will be mild bleeding for a couple of days (ie blood stains or blood tinged saliva) In the event of non stop severe bleeding bite on a fresh gauze for 15-20 mins
Non-surgical tooth extractions are not MediSave-claimable. Eligible surgical procedures, such as wisdom tooth surgery, may be MediSave-claimable, subject to the applicable withdrawal limits and requirements. Your dentist will assess your tooth and advise on the appropriate treatment.

CHAS, Pioneer Generation and Merdeka Generation cardholders can receive subsidies for eligible simple tooth extractions.

Our clinic team can advise you on your eligibility and the applicable subsidies based on your treatment needs.

Keeping your natural tooth is usually the first choice. A root canal treatment can save a tooth that is infected but still strong enough to restore. An extraction is recommended when the tooth cannot be saved.
At Royce Dental Group, a simple tooth extraction starts from $87.20. The cost of surgical extractions varies depending on the complexity of each case.
