Dental Implants
What Are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are a form of tooth replacement solution. Instead of wearing dentures or doing a dental bridge to replace missing teeth, a dental implant can be used to replace a single missing tooth or multiple missing teeth.
Dental Implants are a permanent solution that will help you have a better quality of life by helping you chew better and enjoy your food more!
What Does a Dental Implant Consist Of?
A dental implant can typically be broken down into three main parts: the crown, the abutment, and the implant fixture.
Crown
The implant prosthesis acts as a crown that resembles your natural tooth. It comes in various forms to replace a single tooth (crown), a few teeth (bridge), or several teeth (dentures).
Abutment
The implant abutment serves as a connector between the implant prosthesis and the fixture. It plays a role in connecting and supporting the implant prosthesis.
Fixture
The implant fixture is shaped like a screw and is usually made of medical-grade titanium. It is surgically placed into your jawbone to replace the root of your natural teeth.
Types of Dental Implants
- Single Tooth Dental Implant
- Multiple Dental Implants / Implant Bridge
- Full Mouth Restoration
Single Tooth Dental Implant
Single tooth dental implants are the most common type of dental implant, used to replace the roots of a single tooth. During this procedure, the neighbouring teeth will not be affected.
Multiple Dental Implants / Implant Bridge
This type of implant is used when there are several missing teeth. Dental implants may be used to offer support to an implant-retained bridge.
This solution is more feasible compared to replacing each missing tooth individually, as the bridge provides a more natural look of a row of natural teeth. Unlike conventional dental bridges, an implant-supported bridge does not require any support from its surrounding teeth. It is supported by the fixture of the dental implant, which is rooted into your jawbone.
Full Mouth Restoration
For those who require an implant-retained/supported denture, this procedure helps to replace all missing teeth by anchoring a few dental fixtures into your jawbone to retain or support a denture.
This type of dental implant is much more comfortable compared to regular dentures, as the dental fixtures are directly inserted into the jawbone. Therefore, it is less likely that the dentures will be movable, allowing patients to bite and chew just like with natural teeth.

Benefits of Dental Implants
Prevents Bone Loss
You also tend to lose bone mass in your jaw when you lose teeth. Dental implants can stimulate the jawbone to prevent further bone loss.
Restores Biting Force
Dental Implants allow you to restore and improve your chewing efficiency. With better biting force, you will be able to enjoy your food more!
Permanent Solution to Tooth Loss
Other teeth replacement solutions such as dentures might require replacement periodically.
Comfort and Natural Feel
Improperly fitted dentures can lead to pain from ulcers and cuts in the gum tissue. Dental implants, on the other hand, are secured and can prevent such discomfort. Their firm grip also provides a more natural feel and appearance for artificial teeth, as compared to conventional dentures or bridges.
Treatment Procedure
Consultation by our Specialists and X-rays
A consultation will be done by one of our Specialists, and an X-ray will be taken to check the surrounding structures and the jawbone. Occasionally, we will recommend a 3D X-ray called a Cone Beam CT scan to be taken.
With all the necessary records, our Specialist will be able to advise you on the fees/costs involved.
Dental Implant Surgery
Dental Implant surgery typically consists of 2 stages over a period of 3-6 months, depending on the individual patient’s oral health and bone health.
This procedure involves the surgical placement of a titanium screw onto the underlying bone.
Once the implant has been placed, you will need to allow the implant site to heal for about 2-3 months, before affixing an attachment (abutment) with a crown.
The crown will be custom made to match your neighbouring teeth for good aesthetics.
Dental implant surgeries are usually done under local anaesthesia. We do provide other pain relief option as well, so do speak to your Specialist and discuss the other available options before proceeding with treatment.
Post-Operative Care
Painkillers will be prescribed to you during the healing period, and our Specialist will explain how to properly care for your implant site.
Implants are almost like your natural teeth, so we do recommend that you care for them like how you would with your natural teeth. Do visit your dentist for your regular cleaning and check-ups, and your dental implants will be able to last you for a very long time.
Dental Implant Treatment Cost
The cost of a dental implant varies as there are many factors to consider when it comes to implant treatment. It ranges from the brand and type of implants used, the crown material and whether you require a single implant, a bridge, or a denture.
For some patients, a sinus lift surgery and/or bone graft might be required to ensure implant stability after surgery.

FAQ
Dental implants are known to last a long time, with proper care, maintenance, and good oral hygiene.
Dental implant surgery is generally considered safe when performed by a skilled and experienced dental professional. However, as with any surgical procedure, there are potential risks and complications.
During the consultation, our specialists will review and advise based on the patient’s condition to determine if the patient is eligible for dental implant surgery.
One should also have sufficient bone structure to provide support for the implant. If not, patients may require bone build-up through bone grafting or sinus lift surgery.
Bone grafts help to create a stronger foundation within the jaw for dental implants, which prevents implant failure that may occur for patients with thin or weak jawbones.
Teeth grinding, or bruxism, can exert excessive force and pressure on your teeth, potentially causing damage to veneers over time.
During your initial consultation, it’s important to inform your dentist about your teeth grinding habit. They will assess the severity of your condition and its potential impact on veneers. Our dentist may recommend wearing a custom-made night guard while sleeping to provide a protective barrier between your upper and lower teeth, reducing the impact of grinding. Opting for porcelain veneers may be advisable in this case, as they are more durable and better able to withstand grinding forces compared to composite resin veneers.
