Root Canal Treatment
What Is Root Canal Treatment?
Root canal treatment is a procedure done to eliminate any infection of the nerves of the affected tooth. A root canal treatment is also done to prevent reinfection of the tooth and protect the decontaminated tooth.
Some signs of infection include pain, sensitivity to hot or cold, tenderness to chewing, swelling of the gum and the discolouration of the tooth.
Root canal treatments are commonly done to preserve your tooth without having to extract it, and this usually happens when you have a tooth decay or a cracked tooth.
When Do I Need Root Canal Treatment?
A root canal treatment is needed when a tooth becomes irreversibly inflamed and damaged. The tooth’s dental pulp – also called the “nerve” – becomes exposed to bacteria, and it needs to be removed to prevent any further pain and infection to your tooth.
If you are experiencing pain in your tooth and unsure if you need a root canal treatment, it’s advisable to see a dentist for an examination before deciding your treatment.
Treatment Procedure
Full Consultation and Examination
Our Specialist will do a thorough examination and X-ray of your mouth, to determine your condition and if you do require a root canal treatment.
Local Anaesthesia
Before commencing the treatment, local anaesthesia is administered to ensure you have a pain-free treatment. If you would prefer other forms of pain relief options, do discuss with your dentist.
A ‘dental dam’ is then placed over your tooth to protect your mouth from any chemicals or instruments during the whole procedure.
Root Canal Treatment
There are 2 stages to the treatment. During the first stage, a small opening will be made to clean out the infected tooth. Our Specialist will then use a small instrument to shape out the root canal space for a filling. Once your affected tooth has been healed and ready, a permanent root canal filling or crown will be done at stage 2, to seal and prevent any future infection on that tooth.

FAQ
Your tooth may become more brittle after a root canal treatment due to the removal of the infected pulp. Therefore, our dentists might encourage patients to consider placing a dental crown over the tooth after the treatment to reinforce the tooth itself.
After a root canal treatment, you may experience some soreness or tenderness in the jaw area, which is normal. You can usually resume your day-to-day activities after the procedure. However, it’s essential to follow any specific aftercare instructions provided by your dentist to ensure proper healing.
We generally recommend sticking to eating soft foods after your procedure to avoid irritation and allow for proper recovery. It’s best to avoid sticky and hard foods that can dislodge the temporary crown on your teeth, as well as overly hot or cold food and drinks, as they may cause temperature sensitivity in your gums and teeth.
Root canal treatment is generally a safe and effective procedure performed by qualified and experienced specialist endodontists. However, like any dental procedure, there are some risks involved, such as the possibility of infection, inflammation, or complications with the surrounding structures. You will be able to discuss any potential complications or risks with our dentist, and we will take the necessary precautions to minimise them.
