Is Your Wisdom Tooth Causing Hidden Problems?

Pain

Impacted wisdom teeth can cause pericoronitis, a painful infection and swelling.

Tooth Decay

Hard-to-clean wisdom teeth are prone to cavities.

Gum Disease

The surrounding gums may become inflamed, leading to periodontal issues.

Overcrowded Teeth

Impacted wisdom teeth can cause misalignment and damage to neighboring teeth.

If you experience any of the following symptoms, it might be time to remove your wisdom tooth:

❌ Red, swollen, or bleeding gums

❌ Persistent bad breath

❌ Swelling around the jaw

❌ An unpleasant taste in your mouth

We will recommend that you speak to one of our Specialists if you are experiencing the above symptoms.

Types of Wisdom Tooth Extraction

Wisdom tooth removal can be done through two methods: simple extraction or surgery, depending on the condition of the tooth.

Simple Extraction

If your wisdom tooth is fully erupted and visible, a simple dental extraction can effectively remove it. Local anaesthesia will be administered to ensure that there will be no pain during the procedure.

Surgery

If the tooth is partially impacted or not fully visible, surgical removal becomes necessary. Although wisdom tooth surgery is more complex than a simple extraction, it is a minor procedure that is generally safe. It is advisable to seek a specialist dentist who conducts comprehensive examinations and precise x-ray analyses before the surgery. Local anaesthesia is administered during the surgery to address any concerns about pain relief.

What Is the Wisdom Tooth Removal Process Like?

Comprehensive Consultation & X-rays by our specialists

Our specialist will conduct a thorough examination to assess if surgery is needed. X-rays will be taken to evaluate the tooth’s position and its proximity to nearby structures.

During the consultation, the specialist will explain the risks, benefits, treatment process, and associated fees.

Wisdom Teeth Removal Procedure

If a surgery is needed, it is usually performed under local anaesthesia. Intravenous sedation administered by a qualified anaesthetist can be arranged, if required. There are other pain relief options available such as general anaesthesia.

The procedure may involve a minor surgical process, where the overlying gum is gently lifted to gain access to the wisdom tooth. The tooth will be sectioned and removed in parts, but you should not experience any pain. Afterwards, the area will be sterilised, and your gums will be stitched back together.

Post-operative care

Healing time varies, typically ranging from a few days to a week. Antibiotics and painkillers will be prescribed to ease any pain after the procedure.

Minor bleeding and facial swelling may occur and are normal during the initial days after the procedure. You may bite down firmly on a piece of gauze to control the bleeding and use ice packs to help reduce swelling.

During the healing period, you should maintain good oral hygiene – brush and floss. Do avoid vigorous rinsing, smoking, alcohol and strenuous activities for at least a few days after the procedure to minimise the risk of any complications

Do I Need to Remove My Wisdom Tooth if I Don’t Have Any Pain or Problems?

Dentists often recommend removing wisdom teeth as early as possible, even if they aren’t causing immediate issues. This is because wisdom teeth (also known as third molars) are located at the back of your mouth, making them harder to clean properly. Over time, this can lead to problems like tooth decay and gum disease, which may eventually cause pain and require removal.
